This newbie LOST fan is hooked… and wondering just how the four rescuers will impact the lives of the survivors.

I never got into LOST. It wasn’t on purpose. For some reason, I just never tuned in. But one episode into the fourth season, I got hooked – BIG TIME. And now, every episode offers up more questions than answers, and forces me to sit down and watch every little second.

This week, we find that the real world is told the remains of Oceanic Flight 815 were found in the sea, and that there were no survivors. (Bet that later makes an interesting welcome for the Oceanic Six.) We also meet the four “rescuers” coming for Jack and the few who chose to follow him instead of Locke.

Enter Daniel Faraday, a scientist who is named after a 19th century researcher of electro-magnetism. Last week, Jack and Kate saw the suave rescuer drop to the ground with easy confidence that James Bond would envy. The beginning of this episode, we saw the landing from Faraday’s view. He is so scared, he’s going to need a change of clothes real soon. He’s terrified of Jack and Kate, but realizes soon enough that they are friendly. It takes a while before he lets them know that he’s not actually there to rescue them.

Faraday also comments on the strange light in the island. It’s almost fractured – which the extra text at the bottom of the screen says is an important detail about the island’s make up. (Lord, I hope this isn’t going to be the same as that old movie about a similar plane crash with survivors…) In fact, their pilot had trouble landing because you have to be EXACT in your coordinates to leave or enter the island. If not, there could be dire consequences.

Next up: Miles. He talks to the dead and is a sleaze ball who makes money off a family’s grief before he gets wrapped up in the search for The Island. He is determined to find out what happened to Naomi, who’d given the ship a secret signal that her cover was blown. (Remember her line, “Tell my sister, I love her?") Miles is OK with Jack and Kate once he realizes they are telling the truth – that Locke killed Naomi. He holds them hostage until two of Jack’s followers come to rescue them.

Also on board the helicopter was an archeologist – who is show in a flashback finding a polar bear carcass in the desert with a DHARMA collar embedded in the throat. She gets caught by Locke’s posse, which continues to beat Ben senseless as his sharp tongue needles them. The helicopter pilot offers up the first clue that rescue attempts aren’t really coming for Oceanic Flight 815. We see him in a flashback calling someone to tell them the Big Find is a Big Hoax – which is why he joined the expedition to find the survivors.

If you missed it, you need to download from ABC.com. I don’t think you can truly get the feel for the show – or really get the clues and new OMG facts – unless you watch it.

I love the enhanced episodes of this season. (Amazing that the writer’s strike produced something beneficial.) Without these tidbits of information, I would be totally, well, lost. The text offers up clues to the show, as well as facts from past episodes, which reinforce the significance of what’s happening on screen. I noticed other shows like CSI: Miami and Ghost Whisperer attempted something similar, but the effort fell flat – probably because the items didn’t offer up clues to solving the episodes, just annoying factoids that viewers could live without.

These enhanced episodes make it possible for new fans to soak up every LOST episode until its conclusion in a few years. (Hopefully all of our questions will be answered – and it won’t just be a repeat of old Twilight Zones and vintage flicks.)

Oh, and you MUST check out the interactive elements. I’ve called the 800 number for survivor information. It was really funny/ironic. I’ve also visited find815.com, which I found even more intriguing, though I haven’t had nearly the time to surf it the way I want to.

If you haven’t checked out the series, DO IT. You can catch up with the first two episodes of the season online, then start watching every Thursday night to see them with the text enhancement until the April 24 season continuation. You will be hooked – and have an alternative to the plethora of crime shows clogging the airwaves.
