Love’s Unfolding Dream

A woman becoming a doctor?

A strong-willed woman dreams of becoming a doctor in this straightforward, yet engaging drama based on Janet Oke’s Love Comes Softly series.  Love’s Unfolding Dream is a delight to watch.

Belinda Taylor is expected to marry the right man and settle into the routine expected of ladies during the 1800s.  But Belinda (Scout Taylor-Compton) wants to be a doctor—and she’ll do whatever it takes to make that dream a reality.

Belinda prays and devours everything she can about medicine before approaching the town’s crusty Doc Jackson (Robert Pine).  He tells Belinda to concentrate on finding a husband and being a respectable wife, but finally makes her his assistant when it’s clear she’s not about to give up.

She’s in heaven—at least until a city slicker from New York City comes to town and stomps all over her dream.  This stranger, Drew Simpson (Patrick Levis), believes Belinda should be happy to live in small town and should focus on finding a man, rather than follow the aging doctor her and yonder.  The tension mounts between the two as they argue about Belinda’s choice of profession and their growing feelings for one another.

When Belinda receives word that someone has offered to pay for medical school in Boston, he thinks it’s an answer to prayer, yet she’s reluctant to leave behind the small town of Anderson Corner and the man who may be her beloved.

This movie of the Janet Oke classic is powerful and a must-watch for lovers of Christian and/or historical romance.  It’s tame on violence—there are no town brawls and the people are, for the most part, respectable toward one another.  The story engages the viewer so that taking a snack break is impossible; you MUST finish this move to see what happens.

You’ll be enriched by the story and come away a little more faithful that God does answer prayers.  This appeals to a general audience and would be great drama to watch in a Sunday school class or small group for discussion.

This 87-minute long DVD has no bonus or special features.  In English and Spanish, Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
