No One Lives Forever by Jordan Dane

This follow up to No One Left to Tell is good, but not the thrill ride I was hoping for.

I sat down with No One Lives Forever, eager for the continuation of Christian Delacorte’s story. I first met Delacorte in Jordan Dane’s No One Left to Tell, the story that pulls together all but one thread of his violent and mysterious past. No One Lives Forever is the continuation of his story, with Christian forced to rescue the father he never knew.

The plot sounded great. Jasmine Lee, the deadly assassin who helped Delacorte rescue his lover, Detective Raven Mackenzie, and a priest in the previous book, comes to collect a marker. She needs Delacorte’s help. Her boss, Nicolas Charboneau, has been kidnapped. She needs a million in ransom and help with a rescue mission in Brazil. Delacorte isn’t going to get involved until Jasmine drops the bomb: the Chicago crime boss is Delacorte’s biological father.

Leaving a seething Raven behind, Delacorte gets the cash and flies with Jasmine to Brazil hoping to rescue a man he has never met. It’s not going to be easy, especially with those behind the scenes conspiring to knock of the drug and weapons runner.

The book takes place mostly in Brazil. There are bumps and starts as Delacorte and Jasmine try to rescue Charboneau before his captors can kill him. Unfortunately, it didn’t captivate me. I did not like Jasmine in the last book. She plays a substantial role in No One Lives Forever, and though we see a sensitive side to her when readers learn of her past, I still just did not like her. The story seemed to move at a snail’s pace, and was stilted at times. It did not have the flow I saw in the first one, and did not captivate me with intensity. And the ending was a little too cheesy for my tastes.

That said, it’s not a bad read. This one is steeped in mystery, with less romance than the first, and does offer some excellent twists. Though I had a hard time getting into it, I can definitely see its appeal to fans of David Dun.
