Have you ever watched Globe Trekker or Cities of the Underworld, where they take you to some ancient, long abandoned city?  Ever seen the episode where they go to the Mayan pyramids or the Incan ruins?  Ever noticed how some of the buildings have returned to the forest, almost totally covered by greenery?  Now picture this happening to a major urban area like New York, Los Angeles or Tokyo.  Imagine skyscrapers, factories, and apartment buildings overgrown and, in some cases, destroyed completely.

This is the world of Agito, three hundred years after a science experiment on the moon went terribly awry, unleashing a terrible force upon the people of Earth.

Origin-Spirits of the Past is the story of Agito and the other residents of Neutral City, a city created in the ruins of the past to be a buffer between the Forest, which has taken over the world, and Ragna, a militant city bent on subjugating the Forest.  Neutral City relies on the Forest and its druids for water.  While secretly gathering water,15-year old Agito finds Toola, a girl from the past, sleeping in a time capsule.

Toola’s presence upsets the Forest, who is wary strangers after Shunack, another person from the past left Neutral City for Ragna, with designs on restoring Earth to its former self.  Toola is equipped with the key to Shunack’s plan to conquer the Forest.  The Forest wants to keep these two apart.  Toola, and Shunack, have other plans, plans that will force Agito to stop them.  To do so, Agito will need the Forest’s help to become a “gray hair,” an enhanced being, like his father before him.

Set to a haunting soundtrack and complete with beautiful, and intricate, animation, Origin-Spirits of the Past is both breathtaking and entertaining.  A strong environmentalist theme is woven throughout the movie, but the theme only becomes heavy-handed when characters make statements like, “Man returns to the Forest,” or “I am becoming one with the Forest.”

Overall, Origin-Spirits of the Past is a great anime event.
