Revolver

If you like a movie that makes you go, “Huh?” this one is for you.

Revolver, Guy Ritchie’s psychological thriller, tells the story of Jake Green (Jason Statham). He’s a grifter seeking revenge on the mob boss, Macha (Ray Liotta), who sent him to prison. But when Macha puts a hit out on him, Green accepts the protection of loan sharks played by Vincent Pastore and Andre Benjamin.

And then I was lost.

As far as I could tell a game begins with Green attempting to get the better of Macha. Green believes he’s learned the rules of “the game” and can successfully get what’s coming to him. While he has learned the rules of battle in prison, who is truly his enemy? Is it Macha? Or someone else?

One of the few highlights of movie was the actors’ performances. Statham’s performance, alternately as the duped and the duper, kept me guessing. Liota, as always, delivered a strong performance, progressing from an arrogant mafioso to a broken man. Both performances lend to the theme that a man’s ego is truly the enemy.

If you’re not wishing for the last 104 minutes of your life back after watching the main feature, check out the bonus features that are actually worth watching. In fact, watching them first may make the feature film more enjoyable. The “making of” featured titled “The Game: The Making of Revolver,” includes interviews with director Guy Ritchie and the actors. “The Concept” featurette is a sit-down interview with Guy Ritchie and Editor James Herbert discussing how Ritchie came up with the idea and how they both used different techniques such as animation to convey the theme. Other features include deleted scenes and outtakes, and the director’s commentary. They are all worth it if you’re still interested, especially if you were as confused as I was after watching the movie.

This one will take a couple of viewings for us simple-minded folks that like our movies straight-forward without a lot of “figgurin.” If you like that sort of thing, go for it.
