I remember growing up on Bewitched and I Dream of Genie, shows where animals talked and magic saved the day - only after it caused more mischief than good.
These shows were good clean fun - something rare to find on TV today - and they sparked my childhood imagination, where ghosts and goblins bumped the bed at night and my stuffed toys would suddenly become real to save the day. And did I mention my fascination with unicorns?
In the 1990s, a new generation got to experience firsthand their own Samantha Stephens (Bewitched‘s protagonist for those too young to remember). Melissa Joan Hart offered a refreshing update with her portrayal of Sabrina, a teen witch living in the real world. The show introduced witches and magic and talking animals to young audiences who would eventually become fans of J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer - some the kids of Bewitched fans.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch Season 4 offers some predictable, but funny moments. You can tell it was released in 1999-2000 based on the clothes (Hart actually wears them), the writing style and delivery of punchlines. That age, though, doesn’t detract from what is a really good show that even adults will enjoy.
Of course since the show targets a young audience, there are always lessons learned. Don’t overcharge your credit card. Don’t let jealousy get the better of you. Sometimes seemingly bad things can turn out really good.
What strikes me, watching this as a 30-something today, is how clean the show is. There is not a vampire gross-out factor, like with Tru Blood, and the teens are actually wearing cool clothes that covers everything important - something you don’t always see today.
The first-ever DVD release of the show includes three discs with 22 episodes. There are no extras, but you don’t need them. The show itself is worth a watch.
