Science Faxtion - Living On Another Frequency

One of the most unusual CDs you’ll ever hear

When you go to a buffet you can order a little bit of everything - and that’s exactly what you get when you order up a serving of Science Faxtion’s Living On Another Frequency. This Funk/Metal/Pop/Electronica/Techno/Sound Effects band is comprised of the Space Bass Master of Cool, Mr. Bootsy Collins (P-Funk). He is grouped with the bizarre, but extremely prolific guitar antics of Buckethead (G’N’R) as well as Greg Hampton, who also supplies the majority of lead vocals. Brain (Primus)  & Chris Collier share most of the drumming chores while Tobe the “Tobot DJ” scratches and does his DJ “thang” for the band. Steve Ferlazzo & Morris Mingo do some of the keys and synths. In truth, there are a large variety of musicians sharing a variety of musical and vocal duties throughout the entire album from a variety of studios around the globe.

The opening track known as the “Sci-Fax Theme” is a bizarre mixture of DJ scratching, sound F/X, synths and Funk. A strange compilation of weird noise that will definitely shake the pictures off the wall of your neighbor’s apartment.

Next up is “Lookin’ For Eden,” a fast-paced, heavy song that rocks out and gives listeners a hint of the musical fury that is about to be unleashed on them throughout most of the album. I say “most” because this CD bounces around with a lot of musical styles backed by a monstrosity of talent that veers this way and that over the course of 13 songs that nearly fill the limit of a CD’s 74 minutes.

“At Any Cost” will possibly possibly hook fans of Primus and Living Color when one combines the music with the vocals. The playing is crisp and tight with great production quality.

“Chaos in Motion” isn’t a fast-paced, chaotic song as much as it’s a very heavy song that sounds as if it might be using a drop “d” tuning or lower, punctuated by the hard and sometimes processed vocals.
The title track, listed as “L.O.A.F.” is a fun song has a great, heavy riff.  The production is superb and the delay thrown on the voices during the chorus make a for a very Sci-Fi effect, especially when the song kicks into the guitar solo and is backed by the keyboards panning from channel to channel.

Probably the most entertaining song is one sung by Bootsy called “Life-IS-IN-DeLiver,” a fun, bouncing rhythmic tune that has all kinds of stuff going on throughout the course of the track. It’s sort of like the album cover and the booklet found inside - there’s always something new popping up for you to discover every time you look or listen to it. It and “Lookin’ For Eden” can be heard on the Science Faxtion MySpace link listed above.

“What It Is” is almost a Rap song combined with some heavy rock. It’s followed by the almost Speed Metal attack of “Fatally Flawed Flesh.”

The final track, ”Zionplanetio,” is a combination of Classical music, Pop and Techno. The verse almost feels as though The Eagles “Hotel California” was an influence in regards to the melody and chord progression. But it does have a feel all its own. It’s an odd song and sort of a weird one to end a disc with, but then nothing is typical of Science Faxtion.

Give it a spin and you’ll be trying to decide whether to throw your rockin’ horned fist into the air or to break out your dance moves. Living On Another Frequency may be unusual, but that beats listening to the predictable all of the time.
