Sheryl Crow - Detours

image

Full of harmony and light.

I have only seen Sheryl Crow on award show programs and then for brief moments when she is usually singing a duet with someone else.  It was with surprise that I played her CD, Detours, and discovered a brand new lady who can sing just about anything.

Each of Detours’ fourteen songs deliver a different side of Ms. Crow.  Ballads, reggae, hop, blues and country.  All of them are delivered in a delicious way that have only her style.  She has a wide range to her voice and uses it to attain a richness and prove her point with the words used in each song.  All the songs were written by Sheryl and she accompaning herself on guitar on each one.  Some of the songs segued into the next song like “God Bless This Mess” into “Shine Over Babylon.”  I especially like the bluesey feel of “Now That You’re Gone” and the tribute song to Wyatt Steven called “Lullaby For Wyatt,” another blues-type song.

Ms. Crow’s songs on Detours show off her talent in a market where there are so many performers that come out with an album and then disappear into the night.  Sheryl Crow once again proves why she has lasted so long.  She’s been on the circuit for some time now and the lights are not going to dim on her name for some time to come.

Although there are sad songs on the CD, most tracks have a melody that is upbeat and the words are upbeat as well.  She sings with such ease and her voice is polished that she reaches the high notes with no problems whatsoever.

As the last song played, I was wishing there was more to come.  I’ll just have to wait for her next album to show up so I can give it a listen.  This one is certainly good!
