Smallville (8.07) - Identity

The mysterious Good Samaritan is still saving people in Metropolis, and Jimmy has caught him on film. Is this the end of Clark’s secret?

A mugger who turns out to be working for Tess attacks Lois, and Clark saves her just as Jimmy is snapping a picture. Although he’s just a red blur in the photo, Clark is worried about the story being on the front page of the paper, but Chloe and Ollie disagree and think it’s time the “Good Samaritan” mystery man is proven to exist. It will give people hope. But just as they assure him that nobody is going to find out his identity from the pic, Jimmy does some research and realizes it’s Clark. Tess also sends a meteor freak with the power to steal people’s memories to find out if Lois has the crystal.

Meanwhile, Clark asks Ollie to return the favor of covering up his secret by saving Jimmy while Clark is there, but Lois calls for help at just the wrong time and Clark has to disappear as the mystery man saves Jimmy. Luckily, Ollie is still around in a red and blue costume so Jimmy and a bunch of other bystanders can see it’s not Clark. This also reminds Ollie of who he really is and he snaps out of the drunken stupor he’s been in since discovering Lionel had his parents murdered.

Just when I was saying they needed to get their stuff together if they want to start living up to the good episodes of the past, they delivered. Yes, the show is starting to turn into another Lois & Clark, but maybe that isn’t such a bad thing. The storylines in Smallville (the town, not the show) had run dry a long time ago, and if Clark is going to be in Metropolis working at the Daily Planet, then there’s no way the show can’t have a resemblance to its Superman predecessor. At least they’re doing things gradually rather than have him adopt the tights right off the bat.

Just an example of why this episode was the best so far of the season: Lois goes out on a date with a mind-thief who is working with Tess because she let him out of Black Creek. But instead of showing us that Lois is on to him, they wait until he is reading her memories, where we see her doing her research and finding out who he really is. Many times in the past, they would have doubled up on the scene, but not here.

Add that to the in-jokes about Clark telling Ollie the red cape looked “ridiculous” and the shocking ending with Chloe mind-wiping the bad guy, and this show looks like it could be back on track.

Let’s hope it wasn’t just a fluke.
