Smallville (8.08) - Bloodline

When Davis the ambulance guy said he was looking for his parents, the last people I expected them to be were General Zod and his wife. Who knew this show could still surprise?

Clark gets a package in the mail with his missing crystal, but for some reason it zaps he and Lois into the Phantom Zone, where Lois assumes they’ve been “abducted by aliens” (and she’s not far off). There, they find Kara, who knows how to get out but doesn’t want to let out any “Zoners” like Clark did a few years back. Clark insists on getting Lois out, and a Zoner escapes with her and takes her over. It turns out to be General Zod’s wife, who’s looking for her “son,” a being sent as genetic material attached to Kal-El’s ship to destroy the earth. Much to Davis’ surprise, he discovers he’s the son, and that his blackouts are just the beginning of his process of turning into the destroyer. Clark and Chloe are able to capture the Zoner with John Jones’ crystal, and, although Lois remembers some of what happened, she claims it was like a bad acid trip.

I’m sure it’s starting to become obvious even to those who don’t read spoilers what’s happening with Davis. I just wonder if they’re going to milk it for the entire season, or have a mid-season cliffhanger as they go into the holiday repeats. At least they’re making the story interesting and tying more into the Kryptonian mythology.

Having Kara around just reminded me of how much she isn’t needed on this show. Having someone even more powerful than Clark around is just superfluous, and they have to constantly figure out ways to get rid of her or makes excuses for her not saving him. I say good riddance as she goes off to find her hometown of Kandor. Remember it from the comics? It’s the tiny little city in a bottle. Yeah, that Kandor.

I like that Green Arrow got involved, but it’s totally ludicrous to think that Tess wouldn’t recognize him just because he’s wearing a hood and shades. They’re former lovers who’ve known each other for years, after all. I also think it was good that he admonished Clark for not doing anything about Chloe’s “condition” brought on by Brainiac. As time goes on he’s becoming more and more like the character from the comic book. But is it bugging anyone else that he seems to be spending so much time on his private jet? I guess that means they tore down the old sets for his apartment and office.

I’m so glad Clark and Lois aren’t really moving in together. It seemed like a cheesy move when she said it at the beginning, and I was relieved that it was a fake out. They’re relationship feels like it’s coming along at a pretty good pace right now, and it would be a big mistake to rush it.

I’m getting to like this new season and I think they’re hitting their stride. They’ve finally found a balance between having Clark grow up and become a hero and not turning this into a Lois & Clark clone.

Looks like this season won’t be a complete disaster after all.
