Smallville (8.09) – Abyss

Chloe’s losing her memories of anybody except Davis and Brainiac is replacing them with Kryptonian symbols. Who you gonna call? Uh…Jor-El?

With Chloe forgetting everyone, including her friends and fiancé, Clark tries to help her out but eventually realizes he’s going to need Jor-El’s help. So he gets out the old crystal and re-creates the fortress up in the arctic, and luckily Jor-El’s in a good mood. The fortress removes Brainiac from her head, along with her memories of Clark’s abilities and true nature, but the Brainiac ooze makes it into the system and, by the end, takes over with the announcement that “Doomsday is coming…”

It was about time the Jor-El/Fortress program stopped being another nemesis for Clark, so I was glad to see them “make up,” although with Brainiac leaking into the system I suppose that isn’t going to last long. Either way, I doubt that will be anything permanent, and Clark may start spending more time in the actual “Fortress of Solitude” than he does in the loft of the same name.

If the changes with Chloe stay, then it continues to bring Smallville more in line with the traditional Superman mythos. Having another character out there who knew his secret was strange to begin with, and this turn of events simplifies the plot. I’m still waiting to see if and how they’re going to deal with the identity problem. It seemed like they were leading up to it, but now the issue appears to be on hold - at least until the Doomsday storyline is finished.

I’m not sure why Clark and Jimmy weren’t more suspicious about the fact that Chloe could only remember Davis at the end. Apparently they were so excited that he brought her back, they didn’t think about it. But she’s only known him for a short time, and it didn’t make any sense at all for him to be the only one she still recognized. As for him saying that she’s marrying the wrong person and he’ll wait as long as it takes for her to realize that, it certainly wasn’t completely unexpected. It’s been obvious from the beginning that they have a thing for one another, but up until now he’s been respectful of her relationship with Jimmy.

Obviously it’s no longer a secret that Davis is Doomsday. The question now is: Will it be the comic book version, the cartoon version, or a new version altogether? Whatever it is, let’s just hope it’s a good story. If it’s anything like previous incarnations of the character, he will truly be Clark’s biggest challenge yet.
