Everyone finds out Chloe’s been hiding Davis the serial killer in her basement. Uh oh…someone has some ‘splainin’ to do.
As the Metropolis police hunt Davis and Clark becomes suspicious that he didn’t really die, Chloe decides she and Davis should leave Smallville. But before they can go, junkie Jimmy breaks into Chloe’s apartment for some cash and Oliver finds him there. Davis starts hulking out and captures them both, and when he realizes Jimmy means too much to Chloe, he’s about to kill Oliver instead. Luckily, Clark shows up and grabs Davis, carrying him all the way to the Fortress, where he tries to send him to the Phantom Zone. But Chloe suddenly appears, tells Clark he’d regret doing that, and teleports away with Davis using the octagonal medallion.
After last week’s debacle, anything would seem good, but this one was a decent episode on its own. As ridiculous as it may have seemed that Chloe would stay with and protect Davis, I actually found it realistic in many ways. There are countless people who choose to stay in bad and/or abusive relationships and even protect their partners. And the fact that Chloe felt like she was protecting everyone else by keeping Doomsday (the “beast”) at bay by being near Davis made it even more believable.
One thing I didn’t like about this episode was the Clark-as-bystander syndrome, which afflicted the show for the past couple of seasons before this one. While it’s good to give other characters some screen time, it’s always bad when the lead almost completely disappears into the background until he’s forced to react to something.
Jimmy’s addiction subplot finally panned out into something worthwhile, but it looks like Oliver’s job offer has finally put it to rest. I can’t help thinking that Oliver having Jimmy as his sidekick at this point is a nod to the old Green Arrow storyline in the comics where he discovered his partner, Speedy, was addicted to heroin. Either way, it looks like Jimmy is back as a major player just in time for the season finale.
And speaking of the season finale, this has been one looooooong build-up to the big confrontation between Clark and Doomsday that should be coming in two episodes. All I can say is, it better be worth it.
