Are Jimmy and Chloe really in love? What’s the deal with Lois and Clark’s relationship? The answers may shock you…
…or rather, shock them. Both couples get kidnapped by a psychotic jeweler who straps them to homemade electric chairs and a polygraph and asks what they really think of each other. Despite what the audience is expecting, Chloe really does love Jimmy (and not Clark), and vice versa. When forced to answer whether she loves (a Kryptonite-weakened) Clark, Lois says yes and appears to be telling the truth—then later claims to have slipped her finger out of the polygraph sensor before she answered. That was probably a bluff itself, seeing as how they’re quickly ramping up that relationship. Clark is spared the same question as he’s able to head-butt his captor and get rid of his Kryptonite watch. He uses his heat vision to knock the guy out, producing enough steam to cover what he’s doing.
The other couple highlighted here is Oliver and Tess, who go out to dinner, sleep together, then get into a fight. At first I thought this relationship was going to get interesting, but it seems like the same conversation every time they see one another. Maybe they have big plans for the future with this, but for now they’re treading water.
This episode wasn’t bad overall, especially for this season, but the show still has a ways to go to get back on its feet. There were some funny scenes, especially with Lois, and I admit I feel myself rooting for Lois and Clark to end up together despite the predictability of it. Old habits die hard, I guess.
There wasn’t much else to this show other than the lie detector sessions, which I think is one of the reasons it worked pretty well. The “big reveal” at the end that Jimmy’s parents aren’t who Chloe thought they were—his dad was an alcoholic and he never knew his mom—was pretty meaningless considering we just found out his parents were supposed to be big shots. Then Chloe went and forgave him immediately for lying to her about it, so…uh….what exactly was the point in the first place?
I also had a problem with Miss Investigative Reporter not asking Clark any questions after he managed to save her. There were a lot of clues that something wasn’t right, but she didn’t seem to be aware of any of it. Then again, maybe they’re going the route of the comic books, where Lois supposedly knew Clark’s secret for a long time and just never revealed it.
Nah…I doubt it.
