Hercules plays a priest and tries to forget the disaster known as Meet the Spartans.
Man, Hollywood hasn’t been kind to Kevin Sorbo post-Hercules. Since that cult-fave series ended, the popular he-man has bounced between less-than-stellar television shows (Andromeda), voice-over work and straight-to-DVD B-movies. Oh, don’t even try to bring up Meet the Spartans. If you thought that was a step up, I want to buy whatever it is you’re smoking. Anyway, he turns up in yet another film that seemed destined for a Sci-Fi Channel premiere, Something Beneath.
Plot of the film is passable. Digging underground has released a weird blob-like creature of semi-sentience. Touching it causes people to experience hallucinations, eventually being lured to their deaths by the monster. Sorbo plays a priest, one of a handful of people who begin to realize there’s something weird going on. As everyone goes bat**** insane, the race against the clock is on to destroy the creature.
The acting is fair, but nothing special and the creature…well, it’s fairly generic. It ends up looking like a giant slimy version of the Creeping Terror and we all know how great that was. Otherwise, this is a decent-but-nothing-more time-killer.
There are no special features to be found on this Genius-released disc.
Yeah, so a life in B-movies may be the future for Kevin Sorbo. At least he can do them with his head held high, as opposed to the horrible shame he must have felt every day on the set of Spartans.
