The Mood - Synaesthesia

Get ready to enjoy some great music.

The Mood has been making quite a name for itself in New York City’s music scene.  This five-piece boasts infectious pop tunes infused with a sunny rock ‘n’ roll vibe that has audiences dancing far and wide. The effortless vocal harmonies of cousins Marco Argiro and Corinne Callen gracefully complement gritty guitars, grooving bass lines and pounding drums.

“Synaesthesia,” their first album, debuted 72 on CMJ’s Top 200, gained rotation on XMU channel 31, AND “In the Forest,” and “Outta your mind” have both been featured on XM’s Radar Report.  The band has had memorable performances at SXSW, CMJ, and shared the stage with artists such as Simian Mobile Disco, This Is Ivy League, and Tom Morello’s the Nightwatchman.

When I hear The Mood, I think of “In the Mood” but their music is nowhere near the big band sound of orchestras from the past. They don’t have a big orchestra sound like the title of the album seems to imply.  They’re a five-person rock group instead.

I think “Eskimo Scientist,” the third track on this 6-track album, will be their first national hit and played more on radio stations around the country instead of just on XM or even Sirius.  You can’t help but listen or dance to it.  There’s a constant beat by the drummer and the guitars follow suit with their riffs and loud sounds.  Corinne Callen does an excellent solo on one of the songs that then segues into rock.

The Mood has an excellent reputation in NYC and I think they will soon go national.  Their style is good for live performances in places where there’s enough room for the band and all of the fans to gather around them in the small venues they play.  I like this group and think they have a bright future ahead of them in the music industry although with only a cult following.  It’s going to be difficult to break in to this glutted market.

This is a good album that is sure to fit on your CD rack soon.  Its easy-pop quality makes it a standout that you would hear on an easy rock station in your city, especially “Eskimo Scientist.”
