Table for Three

Scott Teller is afflicted with “rushing disease.” He has a tendency to rush into relationships, and this pretty much leaves him on his own most of the time. When he proposes to Karen and she tosses her cookies over the ledge of the roof where Scott is wooing her, it is pretty much the beginning of the end for Scott.

Brandon Routh, Sophia Bush, and Jesse Bradford lead the cast of this witty little romp. I won’t say it’s the best film I’ve ever seen, but it is funny and it has a ring of truth to it.

After a period of mourning, full growth beard and all, Scott settles down with his bills and decides he needs a roommate. What he gets is two for the price of one. Mary (One Tree Hill’s Brooke Davis) and Ryan (a familiar face on The West Wing) show up to interview for the position of roommate and manage to pull Scott from his slump, even getting him to shave his pity beard off. Caught in a moment of weakness, Scott agrees to let them move in, thinking they are the best of the batch.

Jump ahead a little bit and Scott is beginning to have second thoughts. Mary and Ryan are the “perfect” couple. They do everything together and it is more than a little weird to Scott and to everyone else. Then Scott meets Leslie (Jennifer Morrison, best known for her role as Dr. Cameron on House M.D.) and things get interesting. With an instant connection, they consider where they might go. Turns out Leslie has the same affliction as Scott, but Mary and Ryan are determined to keep Scott from rushing into anything and getting hurt again.

With a variety of tricks up their sleeve, Mary and Ryan pretty much convince Leslie that Scott is a raving lunatic. When Scott causes a scene at Leslie’s best friend’s wedding it’s the end of her patience. Leslie decides to leave town and put some distance between her and Scott. But Scott isn’t willing to give up so easy.

Determined to try one more time, Scott agrees to a road trip with Ryan and Mary to follow Leslie to Oregon. It isn‘t until they are almost there that Scott formulates an idea, but first he must convince Ryan and Mary that maybe they shouldn’t spend every single moment together. The question is, can Scott pull it off and get the girl of his dreams? Or will Ryan and Mary rule in the end?

The cast of Table for Three is a good fit. The chemistry between the characters is smooth and they play well off of each other. Brandon Routh, who I can’t remember from anything previously, is a pretty darn good actor and has great comedic timing. I can see I’ll have to look up some of his previous work. Bush and Bradford are a hoot and really do steal the show. Oddly enough, the most memorable character, with very few scenes, is Johnny Galecki, who played David, Darlene’s boyfriend on Roseanne. He brings his usual dry wit to the role of Ted, who has also seen through the veneer of Mary and Ryan’s insanity screen. Jennifer Robinson really shines in this humorous role. especially after playing such a dramatic part for so long on House M.D.

Table for Three is a little on the silly side and some of the scenes are horribly overacted, but it does come across as funny sometimes, so doesn’t take much from the movie.

Overall, Table for Three is a pretty good watch and if you want a good movie that both sides of the couple will enjoy, this is movie for you.
