It’s the end of the world as you know and I feel fine.
Environmental documentaries are all the rage these days thanks to An Inconvenient Truth. Leonardo DiCaprio has gotten in on the action, and he brought along Mikhail Gorbachev and Stephen Hawking to discuss climate change and its effect on the world. Fans of the music from the documentary will want to pick up the new age ecco-friendly music.
Those of you looking for protest tunes or music that makes you think about the environment, you’ll be sorely disappointed. All the music on the soundtrack is instrumental from the likes of Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins and actor Lukas Haas. The songs are effectively moody but are a little too relaxed to have you worried about the end of the world. They do make you want to light some candles, run a hot bath and just relax.
They may evoke strong reactions in the movie but without the visual aid, the soundtrack feels more like what a soccer mom puts on at the end of a long day as she sips her larger than necessary glass of wine. Of course, the irony that a CD that wants to remind people that the end is near isn’t environmentally friendly is probably lost on the producers. Sure you can purchase the CD to promote the movie and show your friends that you are ecco-friendly but don’t let them see that the CD case is hard plastic that will outlast your great-great grandchildren.
The 11th Hour Soundtrack is great to listen to, but it’s hard to recommend a soundtrack to a film that is trying to raise environmental awareness that comes in a non-environmental case. The soundtrack is beautifully evocative and stirring. It’s not going to stir you into a frenzy of ecco-madness but it will make the end of the world feel a little better.
