Tsubasa : Volume Seven

The Tsubasa gang is back on their eternal quest to restore Princess Sakura’s memories.

Tsubasa is a mainstay of the Clamp line, the story of a group of travelers questing their way through dimensions to save the princess and generally, have fun. Intertwined with xxxHolic (my personal fav of the Clamp line) and produced by Funimation, Tsubasa has known relative fame among anime fans for its cute characters, adorable costumes, and continuing fantasy plot.

Sakura is the princess of the Clow Kingdom, whose soul\memory is spread across the galaxy in the form of feathers. Her childhood friend (and love interest), Syaoran, vows to help her reclaim the feathers. Kurogane is a brutish ninja from Japan who is sent away by his princess, Tomoyo, to become civilized. All he wants is to go home. Fay is a magician whose mannerism resemble his name. He wants to go anywhere but home. Together they are sent on a quest through countless dimensions in search of Sakura’s feathers, a little white critter called Mokona as their guide (not to be confused with the, in my opinion, superior black Mokona from xxxHolic) guiding them and moving them through worlds.

Episodes twenty-seven through twenty-nine follow our lovable group through Piffle World, where one of Sakura’s lost memory feathers is the grand prize in an airborn vehicle competition, called the Dragonfly Race. Naturally all of our heroes decide to fly in the race and win the feather, but there are a few catches. One, the girl running the race is the President of the Piffle Princess company called Tomoyo, and she’s that dimension’s version of Kurogane’s princess, which proves to be completely distracting for him. Second and more importantly, someone is tampering with the race, trying to knock out contestants without a care for their safety. But, as we knew it would be, our heroes win the day (and the feather), and quickly move on to their next adventure.

The next two episodes are both one shots. “Sorrowful Miracle” brings the gang back to the world of episode 26, where Sakura brought back scores of the dead. It turns out that her miracle will only last so long, and though she tries to save the doomed (again), ultimately the crew must learn a lesson about life and death. In the next episode, the crew lands in a crew of pirates, one of whom is Syaoran’s father in the form of a child. This episode is all fluff with just a little adventure.

Like all of Funimation’s DVDs, the obligatory bonuses are here – textless songs and a collection of fabu trailers. Also here is a character and world guide, which is helpful as there are a bunch of characters, some of whom repeat across worlds.

Fun, adventure, and an ongoing plot – Tsubasa volume seven is a fantastic addition to an already great anime.
