Stefan Petrucha and Thomas Pendleton’s third teen novel in the Wicked Dead series is difficult to put down.
Lindsay is on her way to the family shack for vacation where she doesn’t know anyone and she doesn’t care to. Plus she’s missing the big party that she helped her best friend Kate plan. Kate will never survive without her.
It all starts out normally enough. Lindsay starts to enjoy the vacation when she meets a hot guy named Mark and hooks up with some townies that aren’t half bad. Maybe this vacation won’t drag like a burner looz at the prom.
But it’s not all good. Mark is grounded for the duration. And he isn’t just grounded. He’s a prisoner, by people not even his parents. Mark only calls them his guardians, and they are as creepy it gets. When Mark shows Lindsay the wounds on his back, Lindsay takes matters into her own hands. But Lindsay suspects all is not as it seems. And she’s right, but she never would have guessed the truth.
The Wicked Dead: Snared start off with a prologue featuring four girls at the ominous Lockwood Orphanage “rolling the bones” and spinning a tale. Tonight’s tale tells of Lindsay and her ill-fated love affair with the tragic musician.
Petrucha and Pendleton keep the suspense high in this teen novel, and one could easily read this book in one sitting. We immediately love Lindsay and sympathize with her plight, as we all remember our parents ruining our lives at some pivotal moment. And we all remember our first love, and the passion we felt for that person. Adults will also identify with the beleaguered parents, desperate to hold onto that bond we had with our children (they used to love vacations at the family shack), only to see them slip away as they enter young adulthood.
Can Lindsay save Mark from his evil guardians? Who are the guardians and what is their relationship with Mark? What secrets are they protecting so fiercely? Pick it up. It’ll keep you guessing until the very end.
